"Still lie the sheltering snows, undimmed and white;
And reigns the winter's pregnant silence still;
No sign of spring, save that the catkins fill,
And willow stems grow daily red and bright.
These are days when ancients held a rite
Of expiation for the old year's ill,
And prayer to purify the new year's will."

How can music improve our English skills?

i mean come on, i cannot even know poetry.
however, some of songs have rhymes that easy listening, like Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You"
or easy to understand like Eminem's "Loose Yourself" even though Eminem is a rapper (rythm and poems, maybe).

btw, let us check Eminem's:
"His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti"

Mom's spaghetti? really? is that a metaphore or just to make a rhyme?
or maybe we can take an example from AC/DC's "Thunderstruck", personally, it's kind of easy listening but hard to understanding.
So personally, music does not help me understanding english but lyric does.

What about you guys?

    English music can help us understand the culture or vogue, but not much help for improving English skills. That's my opinion. It just let us to keep interesting on English.

    @SuiQi, I'm new to listening to English music, but it got me hooked. I've been learning a lot about how to use words, phrasal verbs and I've been discovering lots of informal expressions. They take me on a path to use English more naturally.

    It also might open a door to discover a culture. For example I love listening to Half Man Half Biscuit, in their songs they bring a lot of British references about British TV/radio programmes, British people, British food, British way of doing things, etc. They help me to get a feel, start to picture of what it means to be British. It's a nice add-on when you learn a language to be able to discover the culture that lay behind.

    I can't agree with you more. @Zom

    Actually, we can learn English through listening to English songs. To listen to songs is likened to read novels.
    The difference between them is just shorter and concise. It's interesting to read those lyrics and learn how
    they used their words to compose a story (a song) and to express their thoughts and feeling.

    Furthermore, the most coolest thing is we can discuss them together on the forum. There are a bunch of enlightened elites here to share their opinions with us. Above all, I highly recommend that you should join us on English Radio group. Come with us, dig and delve.

    I believe it's a set of factors help us to learn and improve our English skills.

    The music can help, because it's so easy to memorize an expression, for instance, but we need to know how to write the words sung in the music, so the lyrics it's important too. After that we need to use the new word/expression to memorize them.

    It's important to start with easy songs, to you continues listening and learning, otherwise you'll give up.

    If you analyse songs that you like will help to learn in a pleasant way.

    This site: www.977music.com/ has a lot of genres and show the lyrics too.

    Enjoy it ;)

    In my opinion, music helps a lot by improving english skills.. if you hear a song often you will keep the words in your mind.. on this way can you learn to transfer each sentences or words in an other context
