The Russian Investigative Committee’s press service says it has opened an inquiry into the death from AIDS in the Krasnoyarsk Territory of a boy whose parents have never sought medical help. The investigators learned that the boy, who was born in 2011 from HIV-positive parents, hadn’t undergone a HIV test in time, because the parents ‘were dodging medical assistance’.
The boy’s mother died in 2013 leaving the father as the only guardian of the boy, though a grandmother and an aunt were the ones actually bringing him up. In 2017 the boy caught pneumonia and received treatment in a hospital where the doctors learned that he was HIV-positive. But his relatives ignored that warning. The boy died in March 2018.
To find out the reason of the death a complex medical examination has been scheduled, in the meanwhile his relatives and doctors are being quizzed. A criminal case on suspicion of the crime under point 1 of the Article 109 of the Russian Criminal Code ‘Causing death by negligence’ has been opened. The investigation is to legally evaluate the actions by the relatives and the doctors.
This April in Irkutsk City investigators opened a criminal case under the same article, after a four months old baby girl died of AIDS in a city hospital. Her mother was a ‘HIV dissident’, she hadn’t been taking medications herself and hadn’t taken treatment for her daughter. She died in the Ivano-Matryonovskaia hospital of pneumocystis pneumonia. The intensive care department’s doctors learned upon receiving the girl that she had the terminal AIDS stage accompanied by grave lungs damage.
The 28 y.o. old mother was diagnosed with HIV more than 5 years ago. She refused the therapy during her pregnancy, ignoring serious warnings by the doctors. Moreover, she unregistered with her place’s antenatal clinic and disappeared out of sight. She visited a doctor only shortly before the due time. She was examined for HIV during the labour and appeared positive. But she firmly turned down chemical prevention that time. The doctors sued to overturn her denial of treatment for the daughter but the court ruled in the mother’s favour since the paperwork wasn’t final yet.
Tens of children die annually because of the views of HIV dissidents. Still, only few of them receive justice. There is a woman sentenced to 18 months probation in the Tyumen city, who refused treatment for her daughter because she didn’t believe AIDS was real. The two-month-old girl died in 2016. Also a Krasnokamsk (the Perm Territory) mother received 20 months probation for the death of her 8 y.o. son.
