"Still lie the sheltering snows, undimmed and white;
And reigns the winter's pregnant silence still;
No sign of spring, save that the catkins fill,
And willow stems grow daily red and bright.
These are days when ancients held a rite
Of expiation for the old year's ill,
And prayer to purify the new year's will."
Helen Hunt Jackson, A Calendar of Sonnet's: February
live as if you were to die tomorrow. learn as if you were to live forever. Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.
it means as the person who would know he is going to die next day will not crave for any material thing, everybody considering himself in the same condition should never yearn for luxurious life and pass a simple life. But for learning, every bit of knowledge we learn should be learnt in such a manner so that it could last for whole life, no limits for learning.
This proverb aims at the necessity of acquiring as much knowledge as possible. This message is, however, not expressed directly, but ex negative, i.e. implicitly, indirectly. In detail, this means: *Not knowing anything may, in theory, be considered as the way towards happiness. *Only if ignorance is the way towards happiness, then gaining a lot of knowledge - being wise - is anything but sensible. *However, ignorance can never be bliss, i.e. having little or no knowledge can never make people really happy. Thus, being wise, i.e. gaining a lot of knowledge, is the only way towards happiness (= bliss).
One needs to read a book to know if it’s good or bad. One cannot know what it’s like by just looking at the front or back cover. This proverb applies to everything, especially people not only books.
